Well painted in the centre with a hunting dog ‘The Spanish Pointer’

Within a blue enamel border

Chinese Jiaqing E19thC

Diameter; 7 3/4″ (19.6 cm)

Condition; shallow chip and bruise 1.4 cm to underside of rim

The image commonly known as ‘The Spanish Pointer’

Originally Thomas Bradford commissioned George Stubbs to paint the scene and the engraver William Woollett to copy it with it being published in 1768.

Several later versions, derived from Woolletts engraving were subsequently published. Including by T. Cook as the engraved title to Vol. II of the Sporting Magazine published in London in September 1793

It is probably this version that the Chinese decorators copied.
